INJURY SEVERITY SCORE (ISS) CALCULATION

ISS = Sum of squares of the 3 highest AIS scores from different body regions

BODY REGION AIS SCORES

Head/Neck: AIS 0 (No injury to this region)

Face: AIS 0 (No injury to this region)

Chest: AIS 0 (No injury to this region)

Abdomen: AIS 0 (No injury to this region)

Extremities: AIS 0 (No injury to this region)

๐Ÿ“‹ What is the Injury Severity Score?

The Injury Severity Score (ISS) was developed by Baker et al. in 1974 and remains the gold standard for anatomical injury severity assessment in trauma patients. It is based on the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), which rates individual injuries from 1 (minor) to 6 (unsurvivable).

The ISS divides the body into six regions: Head/Neck, Face, Chest, Abdomen, Extremities, and External. The score is calculated by summing the squares of the highest AIS scores from the three most severely injured body regions.

๐Ÿ“ ISS Formula

ISS = (AISโ‚)ยฒ + (AISโ‚‚)ยฒ + (AISโ‚ƒ)ยฒ

Where AISโ‚, AISโ‚‚, AISโ‚ƒ are the three highest AIS scores from different body regions

If any AIS = 6: ISS = 75 (automatic maximum)
