What is Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC)?

The Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) measures the total number of lymphocytes in the blood per microliter. Lymphocytes are crucial white blood cells of the adaptive immune system, including T cells, B cells, and natural killer (NK) cells. The ALC provides a more accurate assessment of lymphocyte status than the percentage alone, especially when total WBC is abnormal.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

T Lymphocytes

T cells coordinate immune responses (helper T cells) and directly kill infected cells (cytotoxic T cells). CD4+ and CD8+ are key subtypes.

๐Ÿงฌ

B Lymphocytes

B cells produce antibodies and form the basis of humoral immunity. They also function as memory cells for long-term protection.

โš”๏ธ

NK Cells

Natural killer cells provide rapid innate immune responses against tumors and virus-infected cells without prior sensitization.

How to Calculate ALC

ALC Formula

ALC (cells/ฮผL) = WBC (cells/ฮผL) ร— Lymphocyte (%) รท 100

Example: WBC 7,000 ร— 35% รท 100 = 2,450 cells/ฮผL

Age-Specific Ranges

  • Infants: 3,000-9,500 cells/ฮผL
  • Toddlers: 2,000-8,000 cells/ฮผL
  • Children: 1,500-6,500 cells/ฮผL
  • Adults: 1,000-4,800 cells/ฮผL

Why Age Matters

Children naturally have higher lymphocyte counts. A value that's normal for a child may indicate lymphocytosis in an adult.

When to Check ALC

๐Ÿฆ

HIV Monitoring

ALC and CD4 counts are crucial for monitoring HIV progression and treatment response.

๐Ÿ’Š

Chemotherapy

Monitor lymphopenia during cancer treatment to assess infection risk.

๐Ÿ”

Leukemia Screening

Persistent lymphocytosis may indicate CLL or other lymphoproliferative disorders.
