📋 Key Takeaways

  • • Olympic hockey uses a 3-2-1-0 point system (regulation win=3, OT win=2, OT loss=1, loss=0) — different from the NHL
  • • The NHL uses 2 points for any win and 1 point for an overtime/shootout loss
  • • Tiebreakers: Points → Head-to-head → Goal differential → Goals scored → IIHF ranking
  • • At the Olympics, the top 2 teams in each group advance directly to the quarterfinals

📖 How Olympic Hockey Scoring Works

The IIHF and Olympic hockey use a 3-2-1-0 point system to reward regulation wins and discourage teams from playing for overtime.

Point Values

  • Regulation Win (W): 3 points
  • Overtime/Shootout Win (OTW): 2 points
  • Overtime/Shootout Loss (OTL): 1 point
  • Regulation Loss (L): 0 points

Overtime Format

5 minutes of 3-on-3 sudden death. If tied, a 3-round shootout follows. Shootout continues sudden-death if still tied after 3 rounds.

Group Stage & Quarterfinal Seeding

Each group plays a round-robin. Top 2 in each group advance to quarterfinals. The 4 group winners are seeded 1–4; runners-up are seeded 5–8. Cross-group matchups follow a fixed bracket.

Tiebreaker Cascade

  1. 1. Most points
  2. 2. Head-to-head result
  3. 3. Goal differential (GF - GA)
  4. 4. Most goals scored
  5. 5. Higher IIHF ranking

🎯 Expert Tips

💡 Goal Differential is Critical

In tight groups, GD often decides who advances. A 5-2 win is better than two 2-1 wins for tiebreaker purposes.

💡 Schedule Strength

Playing the weakest team last can be an advantage — you control your destiny with a must-win game.

💡 Clinch Scenarios

Magic numbers shrink as games are played. A team clinches when no one can catch them in points.

💡 Historical Patterns

Olympic groups often see 2-1-0 or 2-0-1 records advancing. One regulation loss can be fatal in a 4-team group.
