Alpine Slalom Combined Time
Run 1 + Run 2 = combined time. Lowest wins. DNF = no combined. Run 2 reverse order.
Why This Sport Matters
Why: Slalom combines two runs. Every hundredth counts. Margin to leader determines medal chances.
How: Enter Run 1 and Run 2 times. Calculator shows combined time, margin, medal zone, Run 2 pace needed.
- ●55–75 gates (men), 45–65 (women).
- ●Beijing 2022 men gold: 1:44.09.
- ●Run 2: reverse order.

📋 Key Takeaways
- • Alpine slalom uses two runs — combined time (Run 1 + Run 2) determines the winner
- • Timing is to the hundredth of a second (0.01s) — every hundredth counts
- • Slalom courses require 55–75 gates (men) with vertical drop 180–220m
- • DNF (Did Not Finish) = no combined time; DSQ (Disqualified) = rule violation
- • Run 2 start order is reverse of Run 1 results — leaders ski last
💡 Did You Know?
📖 How Alpine Slalom Scoring Works
Alpine slalom combines two runs down a technical course. The competitor with the lowest combined time wins.
Two Runs, Combined Time
Run 1 and Run 2 times are added. Timing is to 0.01 second. No handicaps — pure time.
Gate Requirements
Slalom: 55–75 gates (men), 45–65 (women). Vertical drop 180–220m (men), 140–220m (women). Gates alternate red and blue, 4–6m wide, 10m+ between turning poles.
Course Setting & Start Order
Course is reset between runs. Run 2 start order: reverse of Run 1 results — leader skis last. Bib draw determines Run 1 order.
🎯 Expert Tips
⛷️ Run 2 Strategy
If you're behind after Run 1, you must attack Run 2. Leaders often ski conservatively — chasers take more risk.
❄️ Snow Conditions
Early runners face fresh snow; later runners get ruts. Temperature and humidity affect wax and glide.
🔢 Start Order Advantage
Run 2 reverse order means leaders ski last — they see everyone's times and know exactly what they need.
🎿 Equipment Tuning
Slalom skis tuned for quick edge-to-edge. Wrong wax or dull edges cost hundredths per gate.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How is slalom timed?
Electronic timing to 0.01 second. A beam at the start and photocells at the finish. Both runs are added for the combined time.
What is DNF vs DSQ?
DNF = Did Not Finish (missed gate, fell, did not complete). DSQ = Disqualified (wrong course, equipment violation, etc.). DNF gives no time; DSQ removes you from results.
How are gates counted?
Each pair of poles (red or blue) is one gate. Slalom: 55–75 gates for men, 45–65 for women. You must pass through every gate with both skis.
What is a straddled gate?
Straddling means passing a gate with one ski on each side without properly turning around the pole. It counts as a missed gate = DNF.
How does course setting work?
A different setter designs each run. Gates are placed to create rhythm and difficulty. Course is reset between Run 1 and Run 2.
Why do times differ between runs?
Different course setter, different snow conditions (ruts develop), different start order, and tactical choices (attack vs defend).
What are the age records in slalom?
Youngest Olympic slalom medalist: Max Franz (Austria) was 22 in 2014. Oldest: Bode Miller won combined at 36 in 2010.
How does altitude affect times?
Higher altitude = thinner air = less drag = faster times. Beijing 2022 was at ~1700m; Cortina 2026 will be similar. Altitude can shave 0.1–0.3s off a run.
