Why: CBSE and ICSE board exams are a critical milestone for Indian students. Understanding your expected percentage, CGPA, and compartment eligibility helps you plan next stepsโ€”whether that's applying for re-evaluation, preparing for compartment exams, or shortlisting colleges.

How: Enter theory (max 80) and internal (max 20) marks for each subject. The calculator applies CBSE/ICSE passing rules (33% or 35%), computes best-of-five percentage when applicable, converts to CGPA, and checks compartment eligibility. Improvement needed is calculated for failed subjects.

Subject-wise Marks (Theory + Internal)

1. CBSE Grading System 2026

CBSE uses an 8-point grading scale: A1 (91โ€“100), A2 (81โ€“90), B1 (71โ€“80), B2 (61โ€“70), C1 (51โ€“60), C2 (41โ€“50), D (33โ€“40), E (below 33, Fail). Grades are assigned per subject. CGPA is derived from the average of grade points. A minimum of 33% in each subject is required to pass.

2. How Internal Assessment Works

Internal assessment carries 20 marks per subject. It includes periodic tests, practicals, projects, and teacher assessment. The remaining 80 marks come from the board theory exam. Both components must be passed; aggregate (theory + internal) must also meet the 33% threshold.

3. Moderation Policy

CBSE has historically used moderation to align marks across different exam sets and years. In recent years, the board has reduced or removed moderation in some cases. Check the latest CBSE circulars for the current stance on mark moderation for 2026.

4. Compartment Rules

If you fail in 1 or 2 subjects, you are eligible for compartment exams. You reappear only in the failed subjects. Compartment exams are usually held in Julyโ€“August. Passing compartment grants a full pass certificate. Failing in more than 2 subjects requires re-appearing in all failed subjects or the full exam.

5. Improvement Exam Rules

You can improve marks in one or more subjects by appearing in the improvement exam (usually conducted with the next year's board exams). Your best score (original or improvement) is considered. Improvement is useful for competitive exam eligibility or college cutoff requirements.

6. Best-of-Five Policy

When you have 6 subjects, the aggregate percentage is calculated from the best 5 subjects (total out of 500). The 6th subject must still be passed (33%+) for overall pass. This policy helps students whose optional/6th subject has lower marks. Language and core subjects are typically included in the best 5.

7. How to Calculate Aggregate

Step 1: Add theory + internal for each subject (max 100 each). Step 2: If 6 subjects, take the sum of best 5. Step 3: Divide by 500 and multiply by 100 for percentage. Example: Best 5 = 420, Percentage = 420/500 ร— 100 = 84%.

8. Stream-wise Subject Combinations

Science PCM: English, Math, Physics, Chemistry, PE/Optional. Science PCB: English, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, PE/Optional. Commerce: English, Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Math/Optional. Arts: English, History, Political Science, Geography, Hindi/Optional. Each stream has specific subjects that count toward the best 5.

9. Grace Marks Policy

Grace marks may be awarded when a student is 1โ€“2 marks short of passing in one subject, or to help reach the aggregate. The decision is at the board's discretion. There is no guaranteed grace; do not rely on it. Focus on securing the minimum 33% in each subject.

10. Re-evaluation Process

Apply online at cbse.gov.in within the specified window. Fee is typically โ‚น500โ€“700 per subject. You can request photocopy of answer script and/or re-checking. Results usually come in 2โ€“3 weeks. Marks may go up, down, or stay the same. Re-evaluation is useful when you believe there was a totaling or marking error.
