IPL auction values are driven by role, batting/bowling stats, age, nationality, experience, and recent form. Franchises pay premium for Indian capped players and all-rounders. The purse is ₹100 Cr per team with max 4 overseas in the XI.

1. How IPL Auction Works

Players are auctioned in sets. Each franchise has a purse (₹100 Cr). Bidding is open and ascending. Unsold players go to accelerated auction.

The auctioneer calls out player names. Franchises raise paddles to bid. The highest bidder wins. Purse is deducted. Teams must fill 18-25 slots within budget.

2. Retention vs RTM vs Auction

Franchises can retain players (deduct from purse), use Right to Match (RTM) to match a rival bid, or buy players fresh at auction.

Retention costs come off the purse before auction. RTM lets a team reclaim a released player by matching the winning bid. This creates strategic bidding.

3. Salary Cap Rules

Purse of ₹100 Cr. Min 18 players, max 25. Player slots and overseas limit (4 in XI, 8 in squad) affect valuation.

Unspent purse carries over. Teams often hold back for marquee sets. Uncapped Indians don't count against overseas slots, making them valuable.

4. Overseas Player Slots

Max 4 overseas in playing XI. Teams bid aggressively for premium overseas batsmen and all-rounders due to scarcity.

Each overseas slot is precious. Teams prefer multi-skill overseas players (all-rounders, WK-batters) to maximize flexibility.

5. Impact Player Rule

Impact Player allows substitution. Specialists (pure bowlers, pinch hitters) gain value as they can be swapped tactically.

A team can substitute one player at the innings break. Pure bowlers who don't bat, or specialist finishers, become more attractive.

6. Marquee vs Acceleration Sets

Marquee sets feature star players first. Acceleration sets group unsold players for faster bidding. Psychology drives prices.

Early marquee bidding sets the tone. Teams that overspend early may miss value later. Acceleration creates urgency for unsold players.

7. Base Price Categories

₹2Cr, ₹1.5Cr, ₹1Cr, ₹75L, ₹50L, ₹30L, ₹20L. Players choose base price.

Higher base price signals confidence but may deter bidders. Lower base attracts more teams. Star players often set ₹2Cr to filter serious bidders.

8. Franchise Budget Strategy

Teams balance marquee buys with value picks. Uncapped Indians often offer best value. Overseas slots are precious.

Smart teams leave room for accelerated auction. Building a core of 5-6 stars, then filling with value picks, is a common approach.

9. Performance Metrics That Matter

Batting: SR 140+, avg 30+. Bowling: economy 8, SR 20. All-rounders command premium. Age 23-30 ideal.

T20 World Cup and recent IPL form matter most. Strike rate often valued over average for middle-order. Economy and wicket-taking for bowlers.

10. Historical Auction Trends

Price inflation year over year. Surprise picks (e.g. Yash Dayal). Flops (overpaid for poor form). Uncapped players often outperform.

Rishabh Pant fetched ₹26.75 Cr (2025). Pat Cummins ₹20.5 Cr (2024). Young uncapped Indians like Sameer Rizvi have gone for ₹8.4 Cr. Form and potential drive bids.
