Answer Capsule

FIP = ((13×HR)+(3×(BB+HBP))-(2×K))/IP + 3.10. Isolates pitching from defense. FanGraphs creator Tom Tango popularized it in 2006. FIP constant ~3.10.

Key Takeaways

  • FIP = ((13×HR) + (3×(BB+HBP)) - (2×K)) / IP + 3.10.
  • FIP isolates pitcher-controlled events; defense and BABIP excluded.
  • ERA - FIP > 0 suggests luck; < 0 suggests unluck or poor defense.
  • Uses 3 defense-independent stats: HR, BB+HBP, K.

How It Works

Formula

FIP weights events by their run impact: HR (13), BB+HBP (3), K (-2). The constant aligns FIP to league ERA. Pitchers with high BABIP or bad defense often have ERA > FIP.

Defense-Independent

Each HR adds ~13 to the numerator; each walk or HBP adds 3; each strikeout subtracts 2. Over 200 IP, 10 extra HR ≈ +0.65 FIP; 20 extra K ≈ -0.20 FIP.

SIERA and xFIP

SIERA (Skill-Interactive ERA) refines FIP with batted-ball data. xFIP normalizes HR rate to league average—useful when a pitcher\'s HR/FB seems unsustainable. Both improve predictive value.

Expert Tips

Compare FIP to ERA—large gaps often regress.
Use xFIP for small samples when HR rate seems fluky.
FIP predicts future ERA better than current ERA.
Fantasy: target pitchers with FIP < 3.50 for sustainable value.

Sample Calculation

Pedro 1999: 9 HR, 43 BB+HBP, 313 K, 213.1 IP.

FIP = ((13×9)+(3×43)-(2×313))/213.1 + 3.10 = 1.39

Best FIP season in modern history.

Quick Reference

FIP = ((13×HR)+(3×(BB+HBP))-(2×K))/IP + 3.10

  • • 3.10 — FIP constant
  • • 3 — Defense-independent stats (HR, BB+HBP, K)
  • • 2006 — Tom Tango popularized
  • • <2.00 — Elite FIP
