📋 GST Slabs in India

0%: Exempt items (fresh milk, cereals, education, healthcare)

5%: Essentials — food items, medicines, transport, affordable housing

12%: Processed foods, computers, business class air travel

18%: Most services, AC restaurants, financial services, IT services

28%: Luxury goods, sin goods — cars, tobacco, aerated drinks. Compensation cess (up to 22%) applies on certain items.

⚖️ CGST vs SGST vs IGST

CGST

Central GST — applies to intra-state supply. Goes to Central government.

SGST

State GST — applies to intra-state supply. Goes to State government.

IGST

Integrated GST — applies to inter-state supply. Centre settles with consuming state.

💳 Input Tax Credit (ITC)

Businesses can claim credit for GST paid on purchases (input) against GST collected on sales (output). Example: You pay ₹9,000 GST on raw materials and collect ₹18,000 on finished goods — you remit only ₹9,000. Proper tax invoices and compliance are required.

📄 GST Return Filing

GSTR-1 (outward supplies) and GSTR-3B (summary) are filed monthly for turnover above ₹5 crore. Smaller businesses can file quarterly. Annual return GSTR-9 is due by December 31. Late filing attracts ₹50/day (nil return) or ₹100/day (with tax).

🔄 Reverse Charge Mechanism

Under reverse charge, the recipient pays GST directly to the government instead of the supplier. Applies to: imports, certain services from unregistered persons, notified goods (e.g., raw cotton, silk yarn). The recipient can claim ITC if eligible.
