Tile Calculator — Quantity, Grout & Cost
Calculate the exact number of tiles, grout, and thinset needed for floors, walls, backsplashes, and showers. Supports various tile sizes with pattern offsets and waste factors.
Why This Construction Metric Matters
Why: Tile is sold by the box or pallet with specific quantities. Under-ordering means a second trip to the store where your tile may be out of stock or from a different dye lot. Tiles also break during cutting—a 10-15% waste factor is essential.
How: Calculate the surface area, divide by single tile area (including grout joint), round up to whole tiles, then add waste factor. For grout, use coverage charts based on tile size and joint width. For thinset, plan 50-75 ft² per 50-lb bag depending on trowel size.
- ●Large-format tiles (24x24+) have less waste but require flatter substrates (1/8 in 10 ft max).
- ●Use unsanded grout for joints under 1/8 inch, sanded grout for 1/8-1/2 inch joints.
- ●Porcelain tile is denser and more water-resistant than ceramic—better for wet areas.
- ●TCNA Handbook W244 specifies waterproofing requirements for shower installations.

📐 Construction Industry Facts
The US tile market exceeds $5 billion annually, with porcelain being the most popular material.
— Tile Council of North America
Large-format tiles (12x24 and larger) now account for over 40% of residential tile sales.
— TCNA 2024
Tile has been used in construction for over 4,000 years, dating back to ancient Mesopotamia.
— TCNA
Properly installed tile with waterproof membrane lasts 50+ years in wet environments like showers.

Key Takeaways
- Area = Length × Width; Tiles = Area ÷ Tile Area (with grout)
- Add 10–20% waste; patterns like herringbone add 15–20%
- 1 square = 100 sq ft; grout ~100 sq ft per 25 lb bag
- Thinset ~60 sq ft per 50 lb bag; round up for boxes
