Retaining Wall Calculator โ Blocks, Backfill & Drainage
Calculate materials for segmental retaining walls including block quantity, cap units, backfill gravel, drainage stone, and geogrid reinforcement. Supports both gravity walls (under 4 ft) and reinforced walls for taller applications.
Why This Construction Metric Matters
Why: Retaining walls hold back soilโfailure means landslide, property damage, and potential injury. Walls over 4 feet tall require engineering design with geogrid reinforcement. Accurate material estimation ensures proper drainage (the #1 cause of retaining wall failure) and structural adequacy.
How: Calculate wall face area (L ร exposed height). Divide by block face area for block count. Add 10% waste. Calculate backfill volume (12 inches behind wall ร wall height ร wall length). Include drain stone, filter fabric, drain pipe, and cap blocks. For reinforced walls, determine geogrid spacing and length.
- โPoor drainage is the #1 cause of retaining wall failureโalways include drain stone and perforated pipe behind the wall.
- โWalls over 4 feet exposed height require engineering design and geogrid reinforcement per IBC.
- โGeogrid layers should extend into the retained soil at least 60% of the wall height.
- โCompaction of backfill in 8-inch lifts is criticalโuncompacted fill leads to settlement and wall movement.
Retaining Wall Materials
Blocks = (Length รท block width) ร (Height รท block height). Include 4-6" compacted gravel base. Drainage pipe and filter fabric required. Geogrid for walls over 3-4 ft.

๐ Construction Industry Facts
The segmental retaining wall market exceeds $2 billion annually in the US.
โ NCMA 2024
80% of retaining wall failures are caused by poor drainage behind the wall.
โ NCMA Technical Note
A 4-foot gravity wall uses approximately 8-10 courses of standard retaining wall blocks.
โ NCMA
Geogrid-reinforced retaining walls can reach heights of 30+ feet, rivaling poured concrete walls.
