Fire Flow Calculator — Required GPM for Firefighting

Fire flow is the minimum water flow rate (GPM) required to effectively fight a building fire. Calculated per ISO 11492 using building area, construction type, occupancy, and sprinkler status. Fire departments use this for water supply planning.

Why This Construction Metric Matters

Why: Adequate fire flow ensures firefighters can suppress fires before they spread. ISO uses fire flow for Public Protection Classification (PPC) ratings that affect insurance premiums. NFPA 291 references hydrant flow requirements.

How: Base flow = 18 × construction coefficient × √area (sq ft). Apply occupancy multiplier, 50% reduction if sprinklered, and story adjustment. Duration: 2 hrs (≤2000 GPM), 3 hrs (2001–4000), 4 hrs (>4000).

  • Sprinklered buildings receive 50% flow reduction per ISO
  • Type I-A (fire resistive) C=0.6; Type V-B (wood frame) C=1.2
  • Minimum 500 GPM; maximum 12,000 GPM per ISO limits
  • High flow = 1 hydrant per 1,000 GPM; verify water supply

What is Fire Flow?

Fire flow is the minimum water flow rate (measured in gallons per minute or GPM) required to effectively fight a fire in a building. It's calculated based on building size, construction type, occupancy classification, and fire protection systems. Fire departments use fire flow calculations to ensure adequate water supply infrastructure exists to protect buildings and communities.

How to Calculate Fire Flow

ISO Calculation Formula

Q = 18 × C × √A

Where:
Q = Required fire flow (GPM)
C = Construction coefficient (0.6-1.2)
A = Building area (square feet)

Quick Reference

Type I-A: C = 0.6 (Most fire-resistant)
Type V-B: C = 1.2 (Least fire-resistant)
Sprinklers: 50% flow reduction
Duration: 2-4 hours based on flow
